When it comes to a sweaty workout, we love a water break reward as much as the next fitness fiend. But as the mercury rises, it’s more important than ever to focus on our fluids all day long. After all, water is the most essential nutrient our system needs. So here are some ways to hydrate yourself properly this summer.
The Amount You Need
The only way to consume the amount of fluid you need is to drink at regular intervals throughout the day, such as when you wake, at each meal and between meals.
The Best Beverages to Drink
Water is the best choice for quenching thirst and rehydrating because it’s exactly what your body needs and it has no calories. For other beverages, you’ll have to consider the number of calories they contribute.
Hydrate for Optimal Performance
You need extra water when you’re active because muscles generate heat and the body perspires to stay cool. Water also transports energy-providing glucose to muscles and carries wastes away from them, which helps prevent muscle fatigue.
Keep some fluids handy
By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already low on water, so keeping a bottle of water handy serves as a reminder to drink fluids often and avoid thirst.
Eat It Up
Who says you can’t have your water and eat it, too? Ideally we should eat 20 percent of our daily water intake. Summer-friendly fruits and veggies can also help with hydration, so, next time you’re feeling thirsty, pile some watermelons, cucumbers and strawberries on your plate.
Drink It Down
Most beverages will help contribute to your daily water intake. But drinks like skim milk, smoothies, coconut water and coffee (yes!) give you some extra benefits, too.
