On the eve of Dussehra, I cannot but wonder about the grandeur of Ravana, who is also always depicted rather ominously. Since my childhood, we have been told that Ravana symbolises evil and Rama is synonymous for all that is good and just!

But in all our historical annuls and ‘effigy burning’ have we been told about how learned Ravana was and the reason why he asked for death from Lord Shiva himself ?

Here are 7 Facts about Ravana and his tremendous life as a yogi, scholar, astrologer and the foremost Shiv Bhakt amongst other qualities!

1. Ravana knew about his doom:

Since he was so learned, he knew how his downfall was destined. It was this that lead him to request Lord Shiva to be killed by a avatar of Lord Vishnu in order to attain Moksha.

2. He never touched Sita:

In today’s world where rape is so prevalent, Ravana respected Sita’s dignity and ensured no harm came to her despite apprehending her.
He made her stay at Ashok Vatika, away from the palace with only female bodyguards.

3. Ravana started the Yagya led by Ram.

When Ram commenced the yagya for Ram Setu, Ravana performed the opening rites as he was the only Brahman available nearby.

4. Scholar and a musician.

Ravana knew all the 4 Vedas and 6 Upnashids by heart. He was a great Veena player and is known as the father of first few ragas.

5. Shiv Tandav

The incredibly difficult and powerful Shiv Tandav was first performed by Ravana.

6. Astrological Guru

It is said that Ravana could control the sunrise and sunset. He could control all the planets and their positions.

It is a fact that Ravana was a adored ruler. Sri Lanka, Bali and Indonesia had the most prosperous years during Ravanas rule.
